M.D/M.S Admission

The MCC of DGHS is conducting the Online Counselling for allotment of MBBS/BDS, Broad Speciality MD/MS/DNB/Diploma & Super Specialty (DM/M.Ch) seats in all the DGHS is theDesignated Authority for counselling for the 50% All India Quota seats of the contributing States, as per the existing scheme for Diploma and M.D./M.S. courses. Further, the Directorate General of Health Services, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India shall conduct counselling for all postgraduate courses [Diploma, M.D. /M.S., D.M. /M.Ch.] in Medical Educational Institutions of the Central Government, Universities established by an Act of Parliament and the Deemed Universities. Furthermore, the Directorate General of Health Services shall conduct the counselling for all Super specialty courses (D.M./M.Ch.) in Medical Educational Institutions of the Central Government, Medical Educational Institutions of the State Government, Deemed Universities, Universities established by an Act of Parliament, Universities established by an Act of State/Union Territory Legislature, Medical Educational Institutions established by Municipal Bodies, Trust, Society, Company or Minority Institutions. NBE requested MCC of DGHS to conduct a common counselling for admission to both DNB Super specialty & DM/MCh courses from 2019 onwards in order to minimise loss of precious postdoctoral seats in either of these streams.

MD MS is a postgraduate degree of medicine to become a specialist doctor. M.D means Master of Medicine and M.S stands for Master of Surgery. It is a 3 years PG degree course pursued after passing the MBBS course. To take admission in MD MS courses, students need to appear in NEET-PG (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Post Graduate) conducted by the National Board of Examinations.

MD or Doctor of Medicine

MD is a three years course. It involves 3 years clinical training in the field of medicine. They will get the training of how to provide treatment or how to treat diseases only through medicine. It is a non-surgical procedure.

MS or Master of Surgery

Master of Surgery is also a three years training program. Students will get specialty training to provide treatment to the patients through surgical process. The students who have completed their MBBS education from a recognized college and also done their internship can apply for MD MS courses. Either you have completed your bachelor from India or abroad, you have to appear in NEET-PG for getting PG admission in medicine in India.

There are a number of colleges and universities offering MD MS specialisation courses to medical students. At present, Indian Medical colleges are providing 70+ MD/MS courses. The duration of courses are 3 years. If you wish to take your profession to the next levels, then you should pursue post-graduation in a specialised field Like MD in General Medicine or MS in General Surgery.To Apply for MD/ MS Admission in India, aspirants have to appear in NEET-PG by NBE and have to qualify the exam with good marks. There is a fixed eligibility criteria of NEET PG which we will discuss later in the article.

MD/MS Fees Structure in India

The fee of MD and MS courses in India varies as per the popularity and type of college. The cost of studying medical courses from the Private College/Deemed University is generally higher than the government college. Furthermore, the overall cost also depends upon the type of course. With new rules being induced by NMC & MoHFW which forces PVT/Deemed universities to keep 50% of seats from total sanctioned intake respectively at Govt fee structure. (Anticipated to be implemented in 2023 session) .

There are around 620 colleges in India offering MD & MS specialisation courses to the medical PG aspirants. The number of colleges that provide MD courses are high in comparison to the MS specialisation. Choosing a post-graduation course depends entirely on MBBS Doctors interest.

Admission Process of MD/ MS in India

The admission procedure of MD and MS courses is very easy for those who fulfil the eligibility criteria of PG specialisation courses. To get admission in MD or MS in India you have to qualify NEET PG exam organised by the NBE. The applicants must hold all the necessary documents required for counselling and admission.

NEET-PG qualified candidates need to apply for central level and state level NEET-PG counselling.

Medical Council Committee Central conducts NEET-PG Central Level Counselling on the behalf of the Director General Health Secretary. The MCC conducts MD MS counselling for the 50% All India Quota seats in the government colleges and 100% seats in central universities like AMU BHU, AFMC, DU, and Private Deemed universities.

However, the state level NEET PG counselling is held by the Director Medical Education for the rest of 50% state Quota seats in the government colleges and 100% in private medical colleges in respective states. The candidate of general category needed to obtain 50% percentile and 40% required for reserved categories to participate in NEET-PG counselling.
